終於打完了 RDR2 的劇情模式。線上模式只玩過一次,收集完成度還沒開始,不敢說足夠體驗了這個遊戲,但劇情後段直到結局累積起來的餘韻實在強烈,不得不記錄以宣洩一番。
前陣子才開始認真玩,大約兩週打了 70%的劇情,而在那之前的 30%花了大約一年半。為了讓玩家上手這個豐富而複雜的系統,以及認識 van der Linde 幫的眾多角色們,遊戲前期多在以簡單的跑腿或移動之後看對話與過場的方式教學,而這部分對我來說實在算不上有趣。甚至就算在我記得所有主要角色,一行人移動至 Shady Balle 的大宅作為據點,與 Saint Denis 的富豪 Angelo Bronte 交手為止,劇情也不特別使我沉浸。是在 van der Linde 幫一而再再而三的失手後,Dutch 的手段愈發激進卻又只帶來更多鮮血,整個幫派分崩離析的景色被赤裸裸的放在玩家面前,我才感受到這趟旅途的重量,宛如《桃花扇》寫的「眼看他起高樓,眼看他宴賓客,眼看他樓塌了」,只是連那起高樓宴賓客都已經是許久以前,遊戲沒演出的部分,只能靠著眾人的對話想像了。
Arthur Morgan
“You know, all that ever mattered to me was loyalty.
It was all I knew. It was all I ever believed in...
but not anymore, John. Soon... you gotta go. Go... don't look back.”
Arthur 行走江湖這一生搶劫、竊盜、暴力討債都做了,手上沾滿無數鮮血,說是殺人無數也不為過,絕對稱不上是個好人。他自己也知道這一點,當出手相助的對象感謝他,說他是大好人時,他總是回答 "Oh, now I don't know about that"。但他卻又不是個毫無原則,喪盡天良的惡徒,只要對方不干涉到自己的利益,他甚至可以算是熱心助人(當然,這取決於玩家的意識,但我認為 Arthur 在設定上偏向遊戲中的 high honor)。他的原則就是忠誠以及道義,而當 Dutch 一再主張 "I got a plan", "Have faith" 卻又不斷發生意外把幫派帶向死胡同,當 Dutch 在 Guarma 島只因一時猜忌就打死老婦人,當 Dutch 開始為了自己的利益說出任何話、利用任何人、挑起任何對立時,這兩個價值開始衝突了。
在他發現自己罹患肺結核後,他更開始努力想拯救身邊每一個值得活下去的人。在這一時期 "If you three got out, maybe all this'll still mean something" 幾乎要變成他的口頭禪。他仍然賣命幫助 John 逃獄,試圖避免 Wapiti 原住民與美軍之間無意義的流血,還為此受到跟隨一生的 Dutch 的猜疑,但你可以看到他幾乎不對自己的病情做出任何行動。
道義上,他知道自己背著無數生命,在人生最後不求苟活,只希望能救幾個就救幾個。自己孤身寡人,爛命一條沒什麼好失去的,但那些有家庭,還有機會重新過一段人生的夥伴們值得再一次機會。忠誠上,幫派一帆風順時 Dutch 與大家稱兄道弟,但失勢後一切都變了樣。Arthur 說好像 Dutch 變了,John 說也許不是他變了,只是我們現在才看清他是怎樣的人。

I see a man who got found out... for who he truly was.”
讓 Dutch 回到自己認識的那個樣子已經不太可能了,只有手刃叛徒 Micah,是他能為 van der Linde 幫做的最後一件事。
Arthur 人生的最後一段路,就是在貫徹自己的原則,完成最後的 redemption。
John Marston
“I remain a fool, and I'm sure I shall die a fool,
but I'm trying very hard to be something like the man you deserve.”
John 這條命是 Arthur 救來的,而且不只一次。他是 van der Linde 幫裡少數有完整家庭的成員,當 Jack 被 Braithwaite 擄走時,他展現了強烈的情緒;John 被關進 Sisika 監獄時,Abigail 也恨不得親自衝鋒把他救出來。或許是因為幾次描寫 Marston 家的事件 Arthur 都參與了,Arthur 最掛念的就是 John 可以跟自己的家人重新過一段人生。在最後,他不斷重複:"Don't look back"。
而 John 也真的努力過了。從玩家的角度可以看到當了一輩子盜賊的他,低聲下氣只為求個工作;也可以看到 Abigail 質疑他不把自己跟家人的生命安全放在心上,執意要過走在刀鋒上的生活時,是對方先出手挑釁,如果 John 不出手,誰知道和平的生活能不能持續下去。
Abigail 剛提到貸款買地時,John 的第一個反應是質疑。但 Abigail 離開後,John 還是向自己的雇主請求貸款協助,背債買地蓋房。儘管為了付房貸,John 不得不跟著 Sadie 接一些賞金獵人的案子,但從頭到尾他不斷強調自己已經決定離開槍林彈雨的生活了,如果有選擇,他不會再做這些會讓 Abigail 擔心與難過的工作。除了殺掉 Micah 。
因此,當幾個月後 Abigail 回歸時,從玩家的角度可以知道,那是 John 已經嘗試脫離江湖,求生存的同時又要學習面對 Abigail 與 Jack 當一個平凡家庭的丈夫以及父親,卻往往不從人願的日子過了幾個月甚至幾年之後,自己的努力終於得到了家人的諒解與認可的一刻。他們仍然會為了是否要去接賞金獵人的案子而大吵,但 John 在和平的生活中努力為 Abigail 獻上浪漫的一天,然後向她求婚,讓她知道他並不是不在意家人,他並沒有整天抱著回到打壞人當英雄的生活的打算,他是真心地想要讓 Abigail 與 Jack 過上安心且快樂的生活。
“We've lived a lot of lives.”
“Let's just live this one from now on. You and me, Jack, a family, by law.”
“John, I... I never... I didn't know it mattered to you.”
“It didn't... but now it does.”
這是 John 為家人做出的 redemption。
當然,劇情的最後是 John, Sadie 與 Charles 追殺 Micah,完成對 Arthur 的 redemption,也為 van der Linde 幫的故事畫上句點。在那之後,John 回到 Beecher's Hope,Abigail 開心地迎接他,知道自己丈夫掛念的最後一件江湖事已經結束了,從此 Marston 家可以過著幸福快樂的日子。
只是,玩家知道,事情並不會這樣發展。正因為知道他們幾年後將會遭遇的悲劇,才更顯得這一刻的幸福如此珍貴。
Arthur 與 John 的故事,沒有哪一幕讓我感到極端的情緒(也許只有求婚那一段),但 van der Linde 幫步向無可避免的敗亡,Arthur 緩慢卻穩定地走向犧牲自己拯救別人的路線,以及 John 終於為家人帶來幸福生活,這每一幕的感動以及無奈,一筆一筆為這個故事添上重量。
